چکیده

Level set methods are versatile and extensible techniques for general front tracking problems, including the practically important problem of predicting the advance of a firefront across expanses of surface vegetation. Given a rule, empirical or otherwise, to specify the rate of advance of an infinitesimal segment of firefront arc normal to itself (i.e., given the firespread rate as a function of known local parameters relating to topography, vegetation, and meteorology), level set methods harness the well developed mathematical machinery of hyperbolic conservation laws on Eulerian grids to evolve the position of the front in time. Topological challenges associated with the swallowing of islands and the merger of fronts are tractable. The principal goals of this paper are to: collect key results from the two largely distinct scientific literatures of level sets and firespread; demonstrate the practical value of level set methods to wildland fire modeling through numerical experiments; probe and address current limitations; and propose future directions in the simulation of, and the development of decision-aiding tools to assess countermeasure options for, wildland fires. In addition, we introduce a freely available two-dimensional level set code used to produce the numerical results of this paper and designed to be extensible to more complicated configurations.

Real-Time Data Driven Wildland Fire Modeling

We are developing a wildland fire model based on semiempirical relations that estimate the rate of spread of a surface fire and post-frontal heat release, coupled with WRF, the Weather Research and Forecasting atmospheric model. A level set method identifies the fire front. Data are assimilated using both amplitude and position corrections using a morphing ensemble Kalman filter. We will use th...

Object-oriented Framework for Modelling and Simulation of Propagation Processes : Application to a Fire Spreading

An important class of ecological problems concerns propagation processes. In ecological modelling, these phenomena generally occur on large scales and are generally difficult to efficiently simulate because of the number of entities and connections between entities. Studies of this kind of phenomena lack genericity and reusability because they are often presented through the point of view of a ...

Stochastic cellular automata model for wildland fire spread dynamics

A stochastic cellular automata model for wildland fire spread under flat terrain and no-wind conditions is proposed and its dynamics is characterized and analyzed. One of three possible states characterizes each cell: vegetation cell, burning cell and burnt cell. The dynamics of fire spread is modeled as a stochastic event with an effective fire spread probability S which is a function of three...

Concepts for Future Large Fire Modeling

A small number of fires escape initial attack suppression efforts and become large, but their effects are significant and disproportionate. In 1983, of 200,000 wildland fires in the United States, only 4,000 exceeded 100 acres. However, these escaped fires accounted for roughly 95 percent of wildfire-related costs and damages (Pyne, 1984). Thus, future research efforts logically will focus on t...

Automated Extraction of Fire Line Parameters from Multispectral Infrared Images

Remotely sensed infrared images are often used to assess wildland fire conditions. Separately, fire propagation models are in use to forecast future conditions. In the Dynamic Data Driven Application System (DDDAS) concept, the fire propagation model will react to the image data, which should produce more accurate predictions of fire propagation. In this study we describe a series of image proc...
